Energodar may face disaster if Zaporozhye NPP operation not stabilized by winter expert

MOSCOW, October 7. /TASS/. The city of Energodar in the Zaporozhye region may face a disaster if normal power supply at the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant is not restored by winter and the plant does not provide the city with heating and hot water, Renat Karchaa, adviser to the general director of the Rosenergoatom, said on Thursday. "Times can be very difficult, and whether the plant will survive in the winter if [normal power supply and critical infrastructure] cannot be restored is a big question. In addition, the lack of heat is a very serious threat of a social catastrophe that could unfold in the city of Energodar, because all heating, hot water - all this was also supplied to the city by the nuclear power plant," he said on the air of Soloviev Live. According to the adviser to the head of Rosenergoatom, at the moment the plant is not generating heat and electricity, which are required for the operation of a large number of technological units. "The power lines that they (the Ukrainian side - TASS) destroyed, open switchgears, which were also destroyed - today they have created a real threat of a lack of power even for their own needs," Karchaa stressed. He noted that shelling of the plant continues, but the issue of restoring the infrastructure of the nuclear power plant will have to be resolved in any case. "We must keep in mind that hostilities continue, and Ukraine, while quietly talking about nuclear security, is not at all interested in nuclear security in this situation," Karchaa added.
