Russia’s Federal Service for Hydrometeorology and Environmental Monitoring is ready to support Middle Eastern and African countries on the issues of water security, the agency’s head and the national coordinator of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change Igor Shumakov told TASS on Friday on the sidelines of the 2022 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP27) in Egypt’s Sharm El Sheikh. "There is cooperation, through the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), there are also direct contacts <...>. If colleagues ask, we will help them with theory and practice, and research, if necessary," he said replying to a question by TASS. According to the official, the agency "is actively cooperating with all WMO members who ask for help, support or any information." Shumakov asserted that the issue of water security is one of the consequences of climate change which should be adapted to over next decades. Speaking of the situation in Russia, he noted that "overall in Russia all is well." "If we look at the European part of country, floods are becoming more frequent in summer months. And in the Asian part or the Far East, the surplus of water resources has been observed for approximately past ten years," he noted. That said, the official pointed out that "it is still necessary to adapt and a more sustainable water management in Russia’s European part should become a foundation, a rule for those who manage the water resources and those who use them.".
