Israel Night of Chaos: Growing Calls Inside Netanyahu Coalition to Delay Judicial Overhaul After Defense Minister Sacking, Massive Protests
WASHINGTON U.S. Senator Brian Schatz, a Jewish Democrat from Hawaii, has expressed support for Israelis protesting Benjamin Netanyahu s judicial coup on Sunday. I am in solidarity with all Israelis who are peacefully expressing their outrage. What Bibi is doing is alarming, appalling, and perilous for the relationship between our two countries. We stand for democracy, said Sen. Schatz in a statement. Schatz, who recently asked U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken if Israel was in compliance with U.S. law prohibiting military assistance to foreign security forces that violate human rights, is the fifth senator in recent days to air growing concerns about the state of affairs in Israel. Sen. Chris Van Hollen warned U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken that the U.S. appears weak when it fails to hold Israel accountable beyond rhetorical condemnations. Sen. Chris Murphy said the Biden administration should not rule out steps like conditioning aid to Israel and limiting U.S. visits by senior Israeli officials. To that end, Sen. Bernie Sanders recently hinted that he would introduce new legislation concerning U.S. aid to Israel over the Netanyahu government’s approach toward the Palestinians, and Sen. Peter Welch noted that the debate surrounding the “U.S. providing funds that end up being used to extend and expand settlements” would be joined by additional Democrats.
